CBD Student Shadow May 2024 Intro 1

Student Spotlight Meet Meg!

April 25, 2024

Cassandra Bryan Design has a strong mentoring culture, and we often host marketing and design students for shadow days. But even as they shadow, these up-and-coming creative professionals shine bright!

Meet high school senior Meg, who plans to attend KU to major in Visual Communication Design with a possible major/minor in Multimedia Arts and Production. It was our pleasure to host her for a recent shadow day, and we chatted with her about the experience and her future in the industry.

5 Questions With Meg

  • 1. Why did you choose cb{d} for your shadow day?

I was searching for a graphic/web design place with a more urban feel, and cb{d} instantly caught my eye. I found the cb{d} Instagram account and instantly got a feel for the environment, which I was very drawn to — all of the cool tattoos, workplace cat, and down-to-earth feel had confirmed cb{d} to be the right spot.

  • 2. What type(s) of creative and marketing work are you most interested in?

I’m mostly on the creative side of things! I am primarily interested in graphic design and web design, but I’m planning to dabble in some digital marketing and even web development.

  • 3. What made you interested in creative and marketing as a potential career?

There’s so much opportunity within this industry, and I feel as though you’re never tied down to doing one thing. I found that I enjoy creating for a purpose or to convey a message and bring creativity and cohesion to certain — sometimes unexpected — projects. I also love the freelance aspect — having the option to work remotely, travel, or even choose clients really drew me to the field.

  • 4. Did you learn anything about the industry or agency life that surprised you?

I have recently been in the mindset that I need to create everything from scratch. I thought I needed to use AfterEffects for all animation and that using Canva was taboo. The design team was quick to tell me not to overcomplicate things — to use (but not abuse) all the resources I have access to, even AI. I found that super surprising but also very helpful.

  • 5. What was your favorite part of the day?

I loved getting insight into each area that I shadowed, but my favorite part was getting to know everyone on a personal level and learning where they came from, how they got into this industry, and what they wished they would have done differently. Everyone had a different story and ambitions, and they were excited to be where they are today.

I appreciated being able to visit on-site, sit down, and learn about each specific aspect of the design/marketing realm. Everyone was so laid-back and friendly that I instantly felt comfortable.
